Improving Science Education and Physics Opportunities for All
|
APS encourages scientific literacy and enthusiasm through many programs. A few related programs are: PhysTEC (Physics Teacher Education Coalition) is a program to improve the science preparation of future K-12 teachers. It helps physics and education faculty work together to provide an education for future teachers that emphasizes a student-centered, hands-on, inquiry-based approach to learning science. High School Teachers' Days offer professional development for high school teachers through research talks, hands-on workshops, and the opportunity to interact with leading physicists. The "Days" are held in conjunction with APS meetings.

Minority Scholarship Program focuses on increasing the number of historically under-represented minorities, notably African Americans, Hispanic, and Native Americans, pursuing degrees and careers in physics. Programs include undergraduate scholarships and mentoring for minority students. Colloquium Speakers Lists/Travel Grants for Women and Minorities are offered to encourage more visibility for women and minority physicists who volunteer to act as role models. Programs include an online colloquium speakers list, and a travel grant program which provides funding to support campus visits by women and minority speakers. PhysicsCentral is designed to bring the excitement and importance of physics to the public at large. It contains a variety of information including pedagogical elements and descriptions of recent developments in fast-moving areas of scientific research. It also has in-depth stories, profiles of physicists, artistic visuals, educational materials and physics-related links. Career Guidance Programs monitor the changing nature of careers and the employment market for physicists and physics students at all levels. Activities include an excellent web-based job listing, and the Career and Professional Development Liaison Program which serves students through designated faculty member career counselors.
